Preparing for, Surviving & Thriving after a Communication Crisis

This presentation is from 2023 Texas Brewery Roundup Sunday Education Track and was presented by Samantha Glenn from Funky Picnic Brewing & Cafe and Jacob and Lindsey Sloan from On Rotation.

ABOUT THE PRESENTATION

When your brand is under attack from a targeted harassment campaign, what do you do? In this brief conversation and resource roll-out presentation, Samantha Glenn of Funky Picnic Brewing & Cafe and the Guild’s DEI Subcommittee Co-Chair, and Jacob Sloan of On Rotation will walk you through their experiences and insights for navigating targeted harassment campaigns and personal safety concerns at their breweries, and what they learned as they navigated the fallout. This session will also introduce a new member resource, the Communication Crisis Survival Handbook which aims to help breweries plan for the worst as you host events and manage your online brands. Our goal is to make this session and the handbook useful for any Guild member regardless of your politics, ideology, event models, core values, or team member composition. While the resource itself is currently under development, below are the elements we have initially identified for its contents:

  • List of tips to protect your online reputation
  • Resources to navigate and recover from an online harassment campaign
  • Tips to keep yourself, your employees, and your patrons safe from physical harm
  • Sample copy, response templates, and statements for businesses to use in communicating about what they’re experiencing
  • Customizable worksheets for easy reference and action in stressful situations to include online handles, community resources, and connections to make before they are needed
  • Suggested timeline for response, action, and recovery phases
  • Tools for documenting and reporting a harassment/abuse campaign and determining its impact on a business in dollars
